Empowering disadvantaged women and youths
The project aims to facilitate vulnerable women’s access to improved livelihoods through targeted assistance such as garment production training, provision of micro-credit, provision of tools and equipment for rent. Project activities will take place within the Bugembe women’s resource center, where a tailoring entrepreneurial workshop will be established. The workshop will offer tool and professional workspaces for rent, co-working space, a market place for job-orders and capacity building. Capacity building activities will focus on tailoring techniques, entrepreneurship development, marketing, finance and management skills. Sisters Making A Difference (SMAD) groups are small cooperatives that create social capital for women at community level, they will be set up in the communities in and around Bugembe.
Gered Gereedschap is a registered Charity in the Netherlands that aims to increase self-reliance of people and organisations in Uganda, Ghana, Malawi and Tanzania.

Uganda’s economy has continued to post strong growth, by many developing country standards. It nevertheless remains a very poor country and far from the middle-income status it aspires to. Although the poverty rate has greatly declined from 39% in 2002 to 19% in 2012, the strong population growth has meant that the absolute number of poor people has remained the same. One in three children has no food to eat during the school day and 27% of children under five are stunted. Agriculture accounts for 25% of the country’s GDP and employs 77% of the adult population. However, the productivity of smallholder farmers remains low due to lack of access to services such as credit and insurance and reliance on traditional farming methods.
