Syria has witnessed an unprecedented period of crisis and escalating violence since March 2011. Prior to the conflict, Syria had incorporated the Millennium Development Goals into its development planning. Successes were achieved in reducing extreme poverty. Improvements were made in school enrolment rates, maternal and child health, the fight against malaria and HIV/AIDS, as well as expanding access to clean water and sanitation. The extreme national Poverty rate in urban areas fell to 9.9% in 2007, but only to 15.1% in rural areas. Over the short and medium term, Syria’s recovery will depend on the outcome of the current crisis.
