Cote d'Ivoire is one of the largest economies in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), accounting for close to 40% of the Union’s economic activity. It is on track to achieve three of eight Millennium Development Goals. In particular, HIV/AIDS prevalence has decreased from 6.9% to reach 3.7% in 2012, thanks to increased access to prevention and care. Overall, its development has been severely affected by years of conflict, which led to an increase in the number of people living under the poverty line from 40% in 2002 to 43% in 2008. Insufficient investment in basic social services remains a challenge to child survival (108 deaths per 1,000 live births). Only 49% of girls against 61% of boys are enrolled in primary school.
